Course Description
The Type 2 Diabetes Remission and Insulin Resistance Reversal certificate course (with 20 PCLM CME credits), offered by the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine (PCLM) and led by its president, Dr. Mechelle Acero Palma—the only IBLM-certified Lifestyle Medicine Intensivist in Asia—provides an in-depth and systematic exploration of the epidemiology, risk factors, and conventional medical frameworks related to the prevention, management, and remission of diabetes. This program establishes a strong foundation in understanding the burden of type 2 diabetes in local and global contexts, the physiological mechanisms that drive insulin resistance, and the limitations of traditional medical approaches when used in isolation.
Renowned faculty members with expertise in diabetes, endocrinology, and lifestyle medicine present a rigorous examination of current scientific evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of lifestyle-based interventions in achieving glycemic control, halting disease progression, and supporting remission. Participants will review landmark trials, consensus statements, and clinical guidelines that validate the role of nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoidance of risky substances in improving metabolic outcomes.
Beyond theory, the course provides detailed guidance on the clinical application of lifestyle medicine, including assessment tools, shared decision-making frameworks, structured treatment pathways, culinary medicine applications, patient education strategies, and monitoring standards aligned with global remission criteria. Practical modules are designed to help clinicians translate evidence into individualized care plans that are safe, effective, and culturally appropriate for Filipino populations.
By the end of the program, healthcare practitioners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to confidently incorporate lifestyle medicine as a therapeutic modality, enabling them to facilitate treatment, prevention, and remission of type 2 diabetes, and to support the reversal of insulin resistance in both clinical and community-based settings. This certification validates a commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care and positions graduates at the forefront of diabetes remission practice in the Philippines and across Asia.
The Type 2 Diabetes Remission and Insulin Resistance Reversal course is delivered through a structured, fully online format consisting of 10 comprehensive modules, each designed to build both foundational knowledge and practical clinical skills. Content is presented through high-quality explainer videos and professionally developed voice-over slide lectures hosted on the PCLM Learning Management System (LMS). Participants may progress through each module at their own pace, allowing for flexible and self-directed learning.
Course Format
Each module is accompanied by a knowledge assessment quiz to reinforce key concepts and ensure mastery of evidence-based principles. To enhance engagement and promote clinical application, the course incorporates interactive learning elements, including case scenarios, visual diagrams, patient narratives, and real-world decision-making exercises. These components are intended to help learners translate theoretical knowledge into clinical practice with greater confidence and precision.
In addition to the online modules, a clinical immersion that serves as a crucial component of competency development is offered as an optional track. This is a 5-day clinical exposure in a PCLM-accredited Lifestyle Medicine Center offering an established Diabetes Remission Program. During this hands-on training, learners will observe and participate in practical aspects of diabetes care, including intensive lifestyle interventions, patient assessments, behavior-change counseling, shared decision-making, continuous glucose monitoring interpretation, and multidisciplinary team-based patient management. The online coursework and immersive experiential training provide a comprehensive, integrated learning experience designed to prepare healthcare professionals for safe, effective, and evidence-based practice in diabetes remission and metabolic health.
Course Fee
Online Course Fee: P10,550 (20% discount for PCLM members)
Optional Clinical Immersion Fee: P15,000 to P20,000 (depending on the LM center charges)
Individuals who previously enrolled in the PCLM Diabetes Remission and Prediabetes Reversal Course but were unable to complete it are eligible to access and complete this online course at no additional cost.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Explain the role of nutrition—particularly whole food, plant-based dietary patterns—in the prevention, management, and remission of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), as well as in the reversal of insulin resistance.
Describe the contributions of physical activity, sleep, and other key lifestyle factors to the prevention, treatment, and remission of T2DM and the reversal of insulin resistance.
Analyze the major metabolic disturbances and underlying pathophysiology associated with T2DM, insulin resistance, type 1 diabetes (T1DM), and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA).
Evaluate current scientific literature and clinical considerations related to medication deprescribing in the context of T2DM remission and the reversal of insulin resistance.
Identify and interpret the definitions, criteria, and documented success rates for achieving remission of T2DM and reversing insulin resistance.
Identify the clinical criteria that guide medication de-escalation and deprescribing in patients who have achieved diabetes remission and reversal of insulin resistance.
